Living in a Loft

I continue to be surprised by the amount of work we will be doing on the top floor, by E's room and the other full bath. Most of this work was previously done, but some of the walls have just come down in the last week or so.
Floor
The long, narrow stairwell was pulled out, because it was going to be redone to incorporate the floors of the Addition. This meant that the stairway would only need to rise up a half-level rather than a full floor. The solid pony wall around the stairwell also came down and voila, there is a large landing, almost like a loft on the top floor.

East Wall

The doorway to E's room needed to be moved over about 8 inches to put in the new wider footprint of the stairwell. So, that section of wall vacated by the door needed to be replaced. (E's room on the right, and Yarn Room on the left.)

Of course, they needed to remove wall on the other side for the new location of door. Before you know it, the entire east wall has been stripped of drywall, and we are down to lath and plaster.
North Side
Due to the addition and removal of walls downstairs, the plumbing to and from the upstairs bathroom (previously badly hidden in a broom closet downstairs, see below)

needed to be relocated. So, they pull off part of that wall. We discover that the join has come apart and the bathroom is venting into the wall instead of outside.
Pull the rest of the wall to fix the venting problem and redo the plumbing. Note we are not planning to actually do any work in the actual bathroom behind this wall. While wall is open, we add outlets and switches for light fixtures.

West Side
This window was replaced. Also, some of the material at junction with north wall was removed due to the plumbing redo. This is an exterior wall and once they start pulling stuff, it was clear this material was degraded. So, THAT wall comes down.

East Side
There was a tiny tiny room here, about 3x5 footprint. Years ago, long before we bought the house, this was a bathroom, just enough space for a toilet. This section got extended to meet up with wall of Addition. To bring it over to meet up with stairwell, the little side wall got moved over. Obviously, this is only studs now and will need to be walled in.

Ceiling
Some of the ceiling was taken down with this other work. It's a good opportunity to add yet more insulation. It turns out there were TWO ceilings. There was the original lath and plaster. Later, someone furred over that and attached drywall. The ceiling had a bit of a slope as opposed to crisp angular lines (due to roof pitch). We're hoping to fix that.

The drywall guys should be here in a couple weeks. Then, finally, it will start to look finished. OK, it will look like we might finish. Sometime.
