New Laundry Center, Deep Storage

I don't have very good pix of the basement because 1) it looks like a lot of unfinished basements; 2) I didn't understand the scope of changes that would be occurring there; 3) it's full of junk (see #1).

A year ago, the washer and dryer were against the south wall of basement, with the stairway on west side. That area of foundation was to be cut out for a new central stairwell to connect all five levels.

This meant that the washer and dryer had to be relocated. For about six months, they lived in the new Garage. Once the major construction was completed, they were to be moved back to basement but around the corner from where they had been. Also, just underneath the space where the back door was, L decided to install a small window for some natural light.

Here are some before-during-afters:

After washer and dryer were pulled, but before they cut into foundation.

Looking from above after they'd cut in for stairwell. Yikes!

Still waiting for stairs to basement, the last segment of what was affectionately known as the "$%^&^^*&^*%^$%^ forever ladder" period.

The current stairwell, from above...

and below. These will eventually get hardwood finishes and skirting board like the rest of stairwell. And a handrail of course.

As for what goes where washer/dryer used to be, right next to the new stairwell, L has been busy. This will be the basement pantry. This is where the cases of Costco stuff will go. The new pantry upstairs will hold 3 or 4 items each of what I use all the time: canned tomatoes, olives, chicken broth, pasta, paper towels, TP, etc. In theory, I will reload the upstairs pantry once a week or so. We'll see how this works. L plans to add more shelves all the way along this side of basement.

Finally, the west side of basement, before. Back door is at the top of these stairs, and you can see laundry at the left of pix.

This is after the back door was closed in. This was done fairly early so the siding guys could do the new exterior of house. This is looking from above, through what eventually became the floor of new pantry.

L will eventually put vinyl tile squares over the OSB board, to protect against moisture infiltration, not to mention slivers, etc.

Isn't this lovely? Stairway is immediately to the left of this pix. The new small window lets in some more natural light. It didn't take Joey long to find out there was a new window, either.

This space in Garage will now become the recycling center.
In fact, He Who Never Takes A Day Off, has already started on it. Cheeky bastard...
