Trenches of Doom

This has been a pretty bad day for DH, excavator clipped the water line, turns out we don't have Mechanicals permit, so although gas line/meter has been installed/moved, we can't turn it back on until City inspects it and architect did not request that on the permit, and is now conveniently out of the country. Trying to get one before the long weekend will be a challenge - until then we won't have stovetop for cooking or hot water. We do have a microwave, crockpot and electric oven, plus a propane cookstove for camping. Sewer line has been installed, and fortunately we can use it, but trench cannot be filled until approved by City (see above). Water line was repaired.

We have a bid for the foundation excavation, and it is quite a bit lower than the bid from the guy currently on-site for plumbing trenches. However, Lower-Priced Guy is not licensed in Oregon, only WA (about 5 miles north of here) and the City might not approve his work if he's not licensed in-state.

Hopefully, most days will not be this, uh, memorable. For a while, it looked like we would not have water, gas OR sewer. THAT would have been tough. We will have 3 total nights without hot water minimum, and possibly through the long weekend.

I'm taking some time off work tomorrow to hopefully expedite the permits so we can get gas service turned back on.

I feel a little like Laura Ingalls Wilder today.
